Egg Donor Requirements
Many of you are probably thinking about becoming an egg donor. Though it is a very noble thing to do, some of you probably wanted to check whether you are eligible for it. Being an egg donor requires time, patience and many rules that need to be followed closely in order for the implantation to be successful. It is a great responsibility that shouldn’t be taken lightly. So, let’s not waste any more time and see what exactly are the requirements of egg donorship.
You have to be between the age of 20 and 28
Age is important for egg donors for two reasons:
- You have to be at least 21 years old so that you can legally enter into a contract.
- We don’t accept donors that are over 28 years of age because we want to increase the chances of pregnancy and to also reduce the risk of birth defects and miscarriages.
You need to have regular monthly periods
Having regular monthly cycles is important because they need to be coordinated with recipients.
You can’t have reproductive disorders or abnormalities
Your eggs need to be healthy. Every reproductive disorder maximizes the risk of a miscarriage and other complications.
You have to be emotionally and physically healthy
Being of great health is of the utmost importance when it comes to egg donorship. Transmittable diseases can cause havoc both in the child and in the recipient. Also, emotional instabilities can cause problems for you because you will undergo hormonal therapy.
Your Body Mass Index needs to be below 28
The higher the BMI, the bigger the issues with eggs and how they develop. It can also negatively influence the number of eggs that can be retrieved.
You must not be a nicotine or drug user
Studies have shown that nicotine as well as narcotics has a negative effect on fertility. Users will produce fewer usable eggs, while poor egg quality can lead to a miscarriage.
You mustn’t use Depo-Provera shots
Using Depo-Provera shots can delay fertilization for at least six months. After you stop using it, it will take time for your body to start producing a large number of eggs again, until the medication gets out of your system.
You are not currently using Nexaplon or Implanon arm implants
Using implants as a method of contraception reduces your fertility level to a minimum. If you choose to remove your implant, it will take about 2 months for your body to recover its egg level.
You will need to undergo medical and psychological evaluation
This part of the process is very important. If some diseases are present, may transfer from the donor to the child, especially the genetic ones.
You are willing to take injectable medication
About 14-21 days after you begin to use birth control medications you will have to start to use a medication called Lupron. Lupron is administered under the skin via a needle, every day over the course of three weeks.
You are willing to commit to the process for a minimum of 6 months
Egg donation can be long and tiresome. It requires consistency and patience and those are the most sought qualities among the donors.
